On the basis that all projects miss their due date and if you want to have any hope of achieving them, you have to instill a sense of urgency. Additionally, long term projects fail to inspire people to act whereas having audacious goals gets them excited and moving.

So aim for the 10-year goal, and if you fail meeting that deadline, then learn from the experience make and extend it by another 5 - 10 years. But if your target is 30 years into the future and you fail, what are you going to do then?
