You really can't have sprawl in Manhattan, seeing how it is an island. And you can't build condos to the sky either, because only lower Manhattan and the upper midtown have the bedrock to support skyscrapers. Everywhere else pretty much stays as is. And the funny thing is that as much as New Yorker love high tech and modernity, they want it in very old dressings. There's an apartment building north of Gramercy Park region that still has a manual elevator (you know, the VERY old kind that did not have buttons and needs an operator to control the lever for how far it went). I don't think you can find another working elevator like that anywhere in the US - and I have no idea where they get their parts from. Then again, until relatively recently there was a block in NYC that still used the DC power lines drawn by Thomas Edison!
