I really like NYC, been there 3 times. First time young and naive in my mid 20's about 1988. Was a working trip but managed to get out and about. I preferred visiting Greenwich Village, and we made a visit to legendary CBGBs... 2nd time was circa 2002. We tried to avoid the touristy spots. Rode the subway from Manhattan to Coney Island, went to the freak show... went to neighborhood working class restaurants... Did a lot of walking, walked across the Brooklyn Bridge... 3rd time was just one year ago when I visited family members who live in Long Island, a daughter of my half sister was getting married in Central Park... Funny thing is I didn't even know I had family members in NY when I visited 1st 2 times
I love the nitty gritty of the big city, I like the diversity... New Orleans also has many of the same aspects, but on a much smaller scale, which has it's advantages... Big cities I've been to but don't care for: Houston, LA, Atlanta... Miami is really fun and diverse, but wouldn't want to live there... Was lucky to visit Spain several times... Barcelona and the Catalan region is special, the culture is so down to earth, compared to plastic-ville suburban americana... bottom line, it really helps to be able to travel, to visit other cultures and "broaden horizons" |
