Sun Leads Major Retailers, Technology Firms in Announcing Java Point-of-Sale Standard at NRF Annual Convention
Unprecedented Alliance Around Java To Bring More Choice, Lower Costs for Retailers
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 19, 1998-- Sun Microsystems, Inc. and a coalition of more than 20 leading retailers and major technology companies today unveiled the first draft standard for Java(TM) based point-of-sale (JavaPOS(TM)) applications, a ringing endorsement of Java technology as the key enabler for real, seamless, multi-platform interoperability in store systems and devices.
At the National Retail Federation's 87th Annual Convention & Expo, Sun, J.C. Penney Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., The Home Depot, IBM, NCR Corp., Datafit Ltd. and other leading coalition members said Java technology's ''Write Once, Run Anywhere(TM)'' capabilities give developers the power to write applications that will run on any machine in the retailers' corporate network, whether it's a smart card reader, POS terminal or a telephone. As a result, retailers can expect the JavaPOS standard to help deliver lower operating costs, faster application development and deployment and, above all, the freedom to choose best-of-breed hardware and software solutions for individual business needs - regardless of the underlying operating system or instruction set.
