Last week my mother celebrated her 89th birthday with her (living) brothers(2) and sisters(3). I only post it here because she has been dealing with diabetes for at least 30 years. She was never overweight and the only one in our family of six to have diabetes. I'm amazed how well she has handled this condition though I can notice how much more frail she has become and her short term memory is getting bad. Also her circulation is not good as she talks of being cold more often.

I don't think we do anything special for her as far as meals go. Since her memory isn't good we have someone with her at each meal, three times a day and once at a bedtime snack. She checks her sugar level and we dial up the diabetic pen based on that number. Then she takes that shot. For breakfast she drinks coffee. For all other meals she drinks water. Meals can be anything as long as there are not too many carbs. Some carbs are needed to offset the insulin in the shots. One thing she has always been good at is keeping good records. Each meal she writes down the time, sugar level, and the amount of insulin taken. Sounds simple but many don't do it and it helps when the doctor can scan what she is doing and make adjustments.

Hopefully she will have a few more birthdays.
