You are ignoring the fact that most of our companies are international. They don't just compete here in the US. However, when they are successful overseas, then that can create a lot of jobs right here in the US. If they face massive local tariffs like in China, then they can't grow as fast and have less of a need for more US employees. So I think where you are stuck is you think the only impact of tariffs is that it hurts consumers. But economies are more complex than that. They have multiple impacts up and down the chain, both good and bad.

The key to understanding it is think of it like an equation with two sides. If one side is out of balance, then it hurts the other side. To bring it back in balance is not always desirable, but it can help to minimize tariffs on both sides, which is ultimately the best scenario for everyone.
