Mindmeld,
I am glad you don't believe in the 2nd Amendment, because it is people like you who should not be allowed near firearms.
I used to dismiss the idea that we need the 2nd amendment in order to protect ourselves from an overreaching government. I always figured that the government these days will hopelessly outgun anyone.

I now realize that the underlying foundation of the 2nd amendment is trust in the citizens. A classically liberal form of government (different from modern liberalism), which this nation is founded upon, assumes that the population is trustworthy enough to execute and uphold the law. That includes using armed force, if necessary, to deter and stop lawbreakers.

Modern liberals don't believe in that. The population cannot be trusted with the power of firearms. The population cannot be trusted to help out their fellow citizens. The population, if left to its own devices, will hoard wealth, practice avarice, trash the environment, and cause mass shootings.

That is the foundation of modern liberalism. People cannot be trusted. Instead, we need to give the keys to an altruistic government.
