qdog,

isn't NTT scheduled to be broken up a la ATT of old?

Can't reference the article but I remember reading about NTT being like the dinosaur which is largely to blame for Japan lagging in the telecomm industry. This standards issue in Japan may not be up to NTT to decide anymore.

Also remember Dr. V's article about 3G and all this talk of bandwidth. He seems to have a substantially different idea, along the lines of separating voice and data. Not being a technoid myself, I find Dr. V's argument to be very logical and sounds like QCOM has something up their sleeves in that direction. May be it will be another tornedo which will broadside this 3G the same way the CDMA shook up the GSM world.

Further more, Europe is a big market but it is one that QCOM never had so I am not sure what they would be missing regardless of the outcome. The demand for 3G is uncertain. Though I would like the mobility, one has to wonder how much demand would there be for me to download a full length video via my cellphone? May be it will be used in conjunction with my wristwatch TV so I can be watching a movie while I am driving dn the Santa Monica freeway? Within a few yrs or sooner, there will probably be good internet connection in every hotel room, at cable or DSL speed. Is the cost of whatever this 3G cell phone going to be cheaper than land line source? I somehow doubt that.

How many years do you think it will take before the AVERAGE consumer in China, India, Russia, Brazil..... would demand a cellular phone which can download data at a few mgs?

In the mean time, I would much rather corner the business for parts of the world which are still looking for first generation telephones of any type. Demand for WLL and stationary cell phones should be much higher than a gadget which may be prohibitively expensive for casual use such as reading off topic posts on SI.

Just my 2 cents while holding my breath for around this time tomorrow.

Ramsey
