Ramsey - The world thirsts for Off Topic posts on SI.

Lets throw another issue into the European 3G . It looks like the Vodaphone trials are on track. Why not just make 3G be CDMA Air Interface in Europe on top of TDMA infrastructure. It would at least double the available bandwidth.

Vodafone and QUALCOMM Announce Results of Field Trials for GSM-CDMA Operations in United Kingdom

PR Newswire, Monday, January 19, 1998 at 15:50

- Trial Involved CDMA Base Station in GSM Network -

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Vodafone Ltd. and QUALCOMM Incorporated
(NASDAQ:QCOM) today announced the completion of their field trial to
demonstrate Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) wireless access integrated
into a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network. The primary
objective of the trial was to demonstrate compatibility between the CDMA (IS-
95) air interface and an existing GSM network through integration of an
unmodified GSM switch at the GSM-standard A-interface. The trial successfully
demonstrated the technical feasibility of GSM-CDMA integration while
maintaining CDMA over-the-air performance.
During the six-month trial many integration tests and performance
measurements were conducted and documented. Key GSM services and features
tested include voice calls, Short Message Services (SMS), call forwarding,
call transfer, call waiting and authentication. The trial mobile phone
software includes integrated GSM software supplied by The Technology
Partnership (TTP) based in Melbourn, UK.
QUALCOMM and Vodafone are planning to hold a series of Open Days in
February in Newbury, UK, where a final report on the trial results will be
made available. In addition to the technical trial results, QUALCOMM will
present business and economic information related to the hybrid GSM-CDMA
technology. As stated at the commencement of the trial, the findings are to
be made widely available to the mobile communications community for use in
evaluating enhanced wireless technologies.
