It is quite possible that both Trump and Kim knew they'll likely walk away from the table without a deal. Kim needs to come off strong and tough - which he probably is, anyway. Can't always prove that through surrogates. Walking away doesn't always work. Gorbachev walked away from Reagan in Reykjavik - but he still came off weak. Probably, contributed to him ending up unemployed. Hopefully, it'll work this time.
