My worst trade and how it was influenced by taxes concerns.

Back in the late 90's early 2000's I was an investor / trader in Rambus (RMBS). It was at the time a high flying much talked and argued about, technology stock.

For months leading to years many here on S.I. invested and traded this stock and argued about the merits of the stock and it's future.

I can still remember after years or discussions and waiting Rambus finally hit the jackpot and te stock dramatically popped after hours and everyone was ecstatic on the future and the move toward riches.

I personally had traded Rambus many times over the months and when this big day came, I was only a few weeks from the 1 year holding period for the stock to be a long term investment and didn't want and see and decided it was best to hold it a few weeks longer.

Sadly the stock never again reached the heights of $400 plus it reached that after hours and when trading reopened the next day it began to slide for months.

In the end I ended up selling the stock for a nice profit. but FAR less that I would have it I had just took my profits than and not worried about taxes. I loss much more in gains that I would have loss in taxes if I had just sold then.

My lessons learned is take the money when you feel the time is right and don't concern yourself about taxes. Taxes is just part of the trading process.
