I'll horn in here with an unsolicited defense. There's no graceful way in English to provide a generic pronoun, one without specified gender. I prefer to see "he" or "him" used where no other info is available. Strictly imho, to use the now-popular "he/she" or worse, "he or she" strikes me as awkward and inelegant. If we have reason to believe that the likely gender is feminine, an unadorned "she" is best.
You've probably guessed that I don't hold with the contortions some of our more...progressive... experts on language espouse.
