Hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of women were victims of unnecessary radical mastectomy over the course of nearly a century before someone conducted the real science to determine it wasn't saving lives any better than lumpectomy. Negative consequences of good intentions. One can easily list 100s of such pseudo-scientific endeavors that were just as much of a scientific reach as modern day climate science. Hope we live long enough to see it debunked...
