DETROIT - Fiat Chrysler has confirmed it will spend $4.5 billion to build a new assembly plant in Detroit, and that it will also add production to five existing facilities in Michigan.

The Auburn Hills, Michigan-based automaker estimates this investment will create about 6,500 jobs in the Great Lakes State. This new facility will represent the first new assembly plant in Detroit in 27 years.

“In response to a shift in consumer demand toward SUVs and trucks, the company discontinued compact car production and retooled plants in Illinois, Ohio and Michigan to make full use of available capacity to expand the Jeep and Ram brands," FCA wrote in the news release.
