I remember that at the very beginning of the ascent of shale wells, there were endless graphs showing that they had such hard, downward sloping production curves over the first year, E&Ps would have a hard time paying for the capex and opex required... well, those curves still slope downward, but the tails are so long... which makes intuitive sense when you think about gas and oil "flowing" to well center/horizontals through rock and it requires pulverizing that rock to allow the oil/gas to "flow"... plus, many of the shales might be stacked plays, but each level from my understanding (again, don't take my word, I am probably wrong) can be quite thin compared to more traditional wells in easier formations.
