Shahen - Re: "the impact to the application developers is
minimal (i.e. recompile under the new 64 bit compilers with some trivial changes, if any). Is my assumption correct?"

Recompilation can be done - but it will make use only of the speed of the new processor and the "parallelism" that can be squeezed from this old code.

There are more than likely optimum mthods for writing MERCED-explicit IA64 code that will increase the ability of the compilers to execute code segments in parallel. Futher, breaking up code into separate threads for multi-threaded execution may allow the code to execute on parallel processors if available.

Finally, the new operating systems may provide a host of enhanced features (new APIs) that can be of value only if these features are incorporated into application source code. Thus, new, customized software will get the most benefit from MERCED systems.
