Gold is a barbarian relic. There are much more worthy metals out there which do have industrial/energetic use.

Some of the rare metals are so important that your cellphone would not work. Example Tantalum.
Tantalum carbide is the strongest material known to man, the bunker boosters bomb are for sure tipped with this material as are many metal cutting devices.
