I'm pretty sure you'll get a comprehensive answer from Paul, but let me add my 2 cents (not yet invested :-)

I think that the BX chipset may play the same role for Pentium II that the PCI bus played for Pentium. Back in 95 it was the PCI bus and a variety of fast peripherals for it, that in my opinion made Pentium such an obvious choice over a 486. And even though it was possible to buy a 486 PCI motherboard, in consumer's mind PCI was firmly associated with Pentium.

I think that once BX is out, a combination of PentiumII/BX will be a clear choice over a legacy socket 7 design with Pentium classic/AMD/Cyrix.

P.S. my reference to consumers really meant people who design machines, not people who buy them. The latter usually do not know what PCI is.
