I highly recommend this podcast, "Seeing White". It is season two of a podcast hosted by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke. This season runs from episode 31 through 45. The first episode is just an introduction; the real meat begins in episode 32, here:
Episode 32: How Race Was Made (Seeing White, Part 2) March 1, 2017
For much of human history, people viewed themselves as members of tribes or nations but had no notion of “race.” Today, science deems race biologically meaningless. Who invented race as we know it, and why? By John Biewen, with guest Chenjerai Kumanyika. sceneonradio.org
Sometimes his banter with his recurring guest Chenierai gets a little irritating, but sometimes it isn't. It is educational for me, a white guy who at the end of the day doesn't really have much connection to the mindset of black guys. At any rate, that banter is typically only a few minutes of each episode and the rest of it is pretty fascinating to me. I am a fairly well educated guy, especially in American history, but some of the information in these podcasts was entirely new to me. And it led me to read some related books that I may well not have otherwise known about. |
