As I was driving to work this morning I heard a report about the Ethiopian jet that crashed the other day and how investigators had been able to draw a link between that flight and the Lion Air disaster. Okay I thought. And then the next sentence I heard nearly made me drive off the road. "Investigators were able to track the info thanks to data that they got from a company called Iridium that has deployed low earth satellites around the globe". I was barely able to stay focused on the road as the announcer then rubbed it in with "their stock is up huge today".

I couldn't help but smile...and be pissed.

20 years ago I invested in Iridium. I thought their idea of deploying satellites and linking them with (what now appear to be Michael Douglas sized) phones was just brilliant. It was another world back then. I had a few hundred shares and if I recall, once the buzz of the internet days hit, the stock went up to 147 only to come crashing back to Earth. The company had a ton of debt. They were clearly overextended. They were way ahead of their time - and ultimately rather obsolete as technology changed - but man, it was a great idea.

After a few years, the shares were worthless....and I totally lost touch with what became of them.

Until today. Best of luck to those of you who hold this stock. And say a bit of thanks to those of us who saw a little dream 20 years ago but never profited from it.
