bentway,

I don't think Beto, or any candidate, is after support from the Trump cult.
It wasn't my intent to say that Beto was trying to get Trump supporters on board, although I can see how that can be seen in what I wrote.

I guess what I was trying to say is that Trump will say and do anything to get and keep his supporters on board. And since they mostly just listen to him and not anybody else, he will keep his baseline level of support, whatever that will be. Trump will say or do anything that will make his supporters forget that his budget(and I really doubt he knows what is even in his budget) has cuts in social security and medicare that will affect them. He will get them worrying about the wall being built so he doesn't have to answer questions about social security or medicare.

While I think you are correct in your statement that candidates don't need to go after Trump supporters, I don't think that should be a bad thing to do. It would definitely make whoever gets the nomination easier to elect. It isn't/wouldn't be a bad thing to get people to think more about being inclusive, to make them feel that they have a stake in everybody in the country doing better, not just themselves or their particular group. I saw a bit of that in what Beto had to say in his interview and it sounded good. The question is, what candidate could best implement this idea of inclusion without the other sides trying to tear it down. It doesn't have to be progressive in my mind. A middle of the road approach, sort of like Clinton used, would be fine by me.
