That is a fine sentiment, but my experience is that concept is simply not in the vocabulary of many if not most of the Trump supporters. And they do not have enough of an intellectual base to grasp it.
We will need to go forward without them, but thankfully we seem to have the numbers today with the new enlightened and educated women, smart as hell kids, and minorities who know who their friends are i.e. the liberals and Democrats.
As I said to Sun Tzu, you may be right in your first paragraph, but it doesn't mean we should stop trying.
I disagree with your second paragraph. The numbers are there now because Trump, and the Republicans, have done such a bad job of doing the things needed to court the middle and have gone too far to the right. But if the Democrats over reach and go too far left, don't be surprised that these people in the middle won't abandon the Democrats and head back to the other side. It is a real balancing act but someone has to be able to do it. I think the future of the country depends on it. Don't forget how easily 2016 happened. Don't forget 2008 when we thought the Republicans were on life support, much worse than where they are today. Don't forget 2018, where a lot of the gains the Dems got were not just on the left but in the center/left as well. I think the far left is misreading 2018, which may be very detrimental in the long term. |
