No it doesn't make sense even if there is a middle. Let's assume there is a significant middle. Is Trump alienating them and pushing them towards Democrats? Yes, then you don't need to worry about Trump being reelected. No, then you don't have to worry that a "Democrat Trump" will alienate them and be a one term president. You can't have it both ways.
