So like South Africa was under apartheid or Israel is now. Sure - was possible but would be unstable because of birth rates and the open borders, historical integration of large parts of the southwest with indigenous mixed race Hispanics, Chinese and ease for which pan-Europeans made it here would have made the composition very different over time. Rejection of immigration of Italians, Asians, Portuguese, Spanish, Poles and others was a hot topic. The KKK was not just a whites-only but a religious / cultural organization. Lutherans and dark or white Catholics need not apply. They would love Nazis up to the point that they found out that Teutonic was number one in the eyes of the Nazi. In the KKK, it was best if you were a Baptist and a WASP. There were a lot of those other peoples and religions already in the country. Citizenship through birth on our soil (aka "anchor babies") was a difficult thing for racial purists. Hard to put that genie back in the bottle. And now with genetic testing, most people would find they are not as white as I am. The 20th century was a time of great dislocations and people diddle the people they are around. Racial purity is doomed.

But, like Groucho Marx said - "I wouldn't want to be a member of any club that would have me as a member."

At least not for those credentials.
