Michelangelo, like many other artists of the period, painted women who had men's bodies,
Transgenderism or androgyny worship seems to be peculiar to the arts. Hollywood partially follows that trend which goes at least as far back as Shakespeare's time with female roles played by men. I think the MTFs and the FTMs in Hollywood would love to come out if it weren't for the fear losing their generally conservative fan base who'd be horrified to find they're not what they portray. After all, the heterosexual audience has been fantasizing about them sexually or romantically all that time. Their cash streams would dry up and their carefully-crafted personas would be trashed.

So, it would not surprise me that the big names like Michelangelo or da Vinci were in that camp. And their patrons. I don't know if they mean for society to be slowly inured to gender confusion or if they just want to put it out there in a cathartic way.
