Good questions. Unfortunately, yes, Circuit City has gone the way of the buffalo. They still have an online presence, but that doesn't sound like what you're looking for. Same thing with The Good Guys, CompUSA, and other retailers of that kind.

Also, the only places like that I know of are places local to me in Seattle (like Magnolia Audio Video), and knowledgeable friends I have who are audiophiles.

You could try Best Buy, they are apparently still thriving, though I don't know how much expertise you'll find there for audio equipment. They actually own Magnolia. I rarely go into one anymore though since they largely quit carrying CDs.

As for buying separate components or a system, I think most savvy audio and home theater folks would say you're better off buying separate components if you really care about quality sound. It also depends on how good your hearing is too though. I personally wouldn't spend thousands of dollars on fantastic speakers because I can't usually tell that much difference between an expensive set and one that costs a few hundred dollars. Only you will know what is true for you.

I will ask Doren to respond here if he has anything to add, I know he's into music and probably has some opinions about this stuff.
