You can hear what i-node hears if you deliberately listen for it.

Seems to me that it's like those pictures where you can see both the hag and the beauty but you have to know that the other one is there and look for it.

I see several problems in interpreting that speech:

One is context. If your context is all the other ugly things that Trump has said, then you hear him saying more of the same.

Second, Trump is differentiating on the protester side between the rowdies and the gentle people who only wanted to protest peacefully the removal of the statue. It's reasonable to assume that there were, indeed, some gentle people there, people who did not show up to pick a fight. The question then becomes whether gentle people who only want to protest the removal are "fine people." I-node would think that such a protest is legitimate. You would think that anyone who cares enough about retaining a Confederate statue to come out and protest peacefully is a racist, hence not "fine people," perhaps not belligerent but still not what would be considered "fine people."

Third, to accept the second point, you'd have to think that Trump has both the analytical skills and the will to be making such a fine distinction. And that he can be interpreted literally.
