Dear lan@SI,

Nothing has (or had) changed. We implemented a notice as required by GDPR.

I can understand your not wanting advertisers to be able to know your habits.

If you'd have asked me 10 years ago whether I'd install an Amazon listening device in my home, I'd have called you crazy. My father loves the Alexa device I bought him and thanks me repeatedly. But he actually unplugs the device when he isn't using it.

For most of us, convenience, free services and the real extra effort required to safeguard ourselves from the potential abuse of the default behaviors of all manner of application, device and website seems to trump privacy concerns nowadays.

The value to advertisers of your eyeballs in context of your product viewing history is sufficient to offset the cost of operations of our service. Most of the very people who voice their dislike that SI shows a pink appeal box when tracking protection is enabled on our site would not be willing to pay for the use of our service given that choice as an alternative.

We have made a couple of exceptions and allowed some Members to buy classic SI ad-free memberships. But in the general case, we made the determination a while back that it is simply not worth our time and effort to pursue subscription revenues. Having a critical mass of service users is far more important.

Regards,

@Dima
