The Founders lived before the Industrial Revolution in a collection of colonies where slavery was legal in most of them. And it was crucial for those slave states, which typically had small populations that weren't enslaved, buy into the new country. Even with them, there was a lot of land and not a lot of people, so the slave states were important for the survival of the new country.

So no, they weren't idiots. They were doing the best they could with what they had. Even then, the compromises they made wound up causing the country to slide into civil war when the slave states realized their grip on power was slipping away. A lot of people died as a result.
