I recommend turning the security level of your browser to the highest setting or disabling the JAVA and ACTIVE-X components of your browser unitl you fully understand what they can be used to do on your machine (without your knowledge).

Specifically, I would recommend doing a search of your hard drive for the following files :

1. JAutoExp.Dat (template for automatically expanding data)
2. SetDebug.Exe (enables the ActiveX debugger in Internet Explorer)

Also, I recommend you look for the following line in your registry file:

1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Java VM\ActiveXDebug

Just a bit of friendly advice from someone who took the time to find out. Contrary to the popular saying, I discovered that what you don't know can really hurt you. This issue can be as subtle as embedded ActiveX scripts running invisible within an image or sound file, and has the potential to affect everyone.

You should consider your use of the internet "open to public scrutiny" until you understand how the systems work, even if you think you have not accepted anything to create this condition (cookies, ActiveX scripts, Java applets,etc). I recommend you keep anything of importance on a separate computer from the one you use to access the internet and not on the same network, until you know what can be possibly done to access your machine.
