Up to the '50s, male singers wore suits on stage and females dresses, same for the audience. The music was fairly calm. The '60s hit and performers became more and more casual to the point they looked trashy. So did the audience. The music became both loud and chaotic.

Case in point: Try to imagine a mosh pit with the performers and kids in suits and ties and dresses.

What the '60s brought about in its pursuit of free expression was a corresponding loss of respect and lack of restraint and it showed in their clothing. Shakespeare said it, "The apparel oft proclaims the man."
