>> Are you of the school that sees morals as all about sex?
Absolutely not. Morals are the principles on which integrity is built. In all aspects of life.
Morality is a key part of government. Morality is a key part of civilization. We need an underlying element of human decency, being fair and honest with each other, of honoring our commitments, of following the major rules, of honoring the system. Foundations of morality: care, fairness, loyalty, liberty, authority, and sanctity. I don't bother much with sanctity because that's mostly cultural, thus arbitrary, but the others are bedrock. Who are we as a country, as a culture, as a civilization without them underlying our standards?
I don't want to live in a dog-eat-dog world. I oppose any force that advocates or fosters or permits such a world. Hence, I oppose cultural Trumpism. Humanity has come to far to backtrack on the arc of civilization. Legality is a destructive standard for judging behavior. Particularly ironic from folks who until recently wanted to minimize government and foster liberty.
While I hear you, I think you attribute far more to Trump than is warranted. Your first paragraph above describes Trump just as well as it did any president.
Your second paragraph is about your "want", but the reality is the world is dog-eat-dog. I'm not sure how you attribute it to Trumpism but that attribute was hear long before Trump and will be here long after.
Perhaps legality is a less than ideal standard, but it works better than morality, in that legality is codified over hundreds of years dating well into our predecessors, it addresses just about everything, and it represents a consistent standard. Moreover, morality is personal -- sometimes I may see as moral things which you don't. You try to raise your kids to support your own morality but they don't. They are affected by other interests.
Finally -- I would just say that Trump has tried to reduce the scope of government and to foster liberty as much or more than any president I can recall.
In the last week he finished off ISIS. He announced his Rx drug pricing initiative which is very close to what, IMO, needs to be done (an approach I suggested on the other thread years ago) which will reduce prices but not at the expense of new drug development.
The man has produced more for the country than any president in my lifetime. No one comes close. Real economic recovery after eight years of Obama backpedaling. Getting the US out of bad deals the previous president foolishly got us into. Opening negotiations with NK. Creating jobs for the poor which has dramatically reduced demand for services. Worked against a hostile Congress toward solving the border problem. Put foreign nations on notice they need to step up and pay their shares, that we're not their sidewalk.
Not trying to sell you anything other than you really ought to take time to contrast Trump's extensive record of successes with what we expect of presidents, then ask yourself why this one has been so successful. Is it because he promotes a concept of dog-eat-dog-ism? If so, we need more not less. |
