Only because you choose a silly accounting system. CO2 produced while making products to meet California demand is CO2 produced on behalf of California. California may very well have clean power production to make products exported to other countries.

But, China uses coal to make products exported to California. That is coal based CO2 produced on behalf of California. If California did not consume such products, then that coal produced CO2 would not be released to the atmosphere.

Your accounting gives you comforts that are irrelevant in the closed system. The real world is a closed system.

Of course, you can now make the claim that CO2 produced on behalf of California does NOT affect the California climate. Have fun with that.
