U.S. PC Giants To Form Modem Venture - NYT

AP-Dow Jones News Service

NEW YORK -- Three of the largest computer companies in the U.S. are
teaming up with a telecommunications giant to make fast-speed modems
widely available by Christmas, The New York Times reported Tuesday.

Compaq Computer Corp. (CPQ), Intel Corp. (INTC) and Microsoft
Corp. (MSFT) will announce the venture at a communications conference
in Washington next week, the newspaper said, citing executives involved in
the alliance.

They have met with the GTE Corp. (GTE) and four or five Baby Bells to
agree on technical standards. Bell Atlantic (BEL) is said to be the only
major regional phone company to opt out of the project.

The new modems, which would run at speeds up to 30 times faster than
existing popular models, would plug into normal telephone lines but remain
connected to outside telephone lines at all times without the need to dial a
service provider, The New York Times reported.
