Step one is determining whose best possible score is not greater than the leader's current score. That eliminates a lot of people, including everyone who chose NC to go the distance. The one person who chose MI St to win it all has so much ground to make up that he needs a miracle. Everyone left pretty much chose the same teams, which means their only chance to leapfrog each other is where they differ. But the few that do differ, e.g. have Texas Tech, have too much ground to make up as well. That's why it's basically a three person race.

In Gloop's case, he only has Duke and UVA remaining, but so do the two tied for first ahead of him. To leapfrog them, he needs UVA to win it all as they both chose Duke. Any other possibility affects all three equally, e.g. MI St, Auburn, etc winning, meaning the two leaders have a lock on first and second if anyone other than UVA wins it all; it just depends on the order. Gloop Jr's hopes are on KY because they are a two seed vs Gonzaga a one. That means as long as KY wins one more game, he'll get that extra point and can only then be beaten by his father if UVA also advances.
