I get the impression you are thinking out loud there. My answer would be no.

Boeing decline on the crash day was about $53. Boeing recovery since has been about $34. Did a little research on the DOW. It's price weighted. I didn't know that. Boeing is the big fish...in terms of price. But not nearly big enough to account for swings in the DOW imo...at least at these amounts. I guess you could calculate the impact of a given company on the average by taking its percentage of the total of all the stock prices for one day. The algorithm is probably a lot more complicated than that but maybe that general approach would work. Anyway, I'm thinking out loud here and this is my take.
