Thread, here is what I dont understand from the article about this modem technology that these 3 are working on. They are merely trying to reach a standard with the Baby Bells so that its supported by them. It does not really tell which companies will be making the actual client modem and the Server equipment which would sit on the phone company side. Of the 3 Intel has shown that they have a networking division capable of this but with other issues on hand which are already pressuring their gross margins I doubt they will get into making modems in a big way. 3Com on the other hand can very easily start making those after a standard is reached plus 3Com is not committed to any flavor of ADSL right now (read as no inventory glut of outdated stuff). My feeling is that this is positive for both Ascend and 3Com. The big 3 just want people to move into buying newer and faster PCs and this is just another carrot in front of the donkey, not a strategic shift in market focus.
Wall Street as usual in its shortsighted way will lead 3Com to the slaughter house because it simply can.
Remember again that they trade and we invest.
