VIENNA, Va., Jan. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Cable & Wireless, Inc., (CWI) the largest telecommunications company exclusively serving businesses, scored the preferred ranking as one of the top three carriers offering Internet users the "best value" in the largest ever test of national Internet backbone providers. This comprehensive study, conducted by Keynote Systems and Boardwatch Magazine, tested 34 U.S. and Canadian Internet backbones evaluating performance measurements and pricing structures over a six-week period to determine which networks offer the Internet community the best value. Keynote's performance results and best value rankings comprise a portion of the overall Keynote/Boardwatch Internet Backbone Performance Index. This index is an industry-standard ranking of Internet backbones based on the measured performance experienced by end users accessing World Wide Web sites connected to those backbones. Full analysis and details of this study are available in the Fall issue of the Boardwatch Directory of Internet Service Providers. "Cable & Wireless is continually developing and upgrading its network to provide our business customers with the superior performance and reliability they require. We are thrilled to receive this recognition and to offer our customers the valuable Internet tools they need to stay competitive in today's fast-paced marketplace," commented Charles Gibney, general manager of Cable & Wireless Internet Exchange. In 1997, Cable & Wireless deployed a DS3/OC3 ATM backbone within the U.S. with transatlantic extensions. This advanced architecture allowed Cable & Wireless to reduce the number of hops in its network, enhancing both speed and efficiency, while providing a more robust, quality platform for innovative Internet services. "Already highly ranked in total performance, Cable & Wireless Internet Exchange may now be perceived as an even better value with the aggressive price promotion that has been introduced since this study was performed in the Fall," informed Charles Gibney. Today, business customers can receive T-1 access to the Internet for just $1,500/month. Additional information on this promotion can be found at the Cable & Wireless Internet Exchange homepage (www.cwix.net). Cable & Wireless is one of the world's leading providers of international telecommunications services. Its businesses provide 15 million customers in 70 countries with a complete range of international, domestic and mobile communications. Cable & Wireless Internet Exchange, the company's complete portfolio of tailored Internet solutions, operates over Cable & Wireless' high-capacity IP backbone network which connects major business and financial centers throughout the U.S., the Far East and Europe.
