I remember talking to a retired publisher a few years ago about the decline in journalism standards. He said loss of revenue (due to the rise of the internet) at the major news orgs has led to a dramatic reduction in what entry level reporters get paid over the past decade..at least compared to what you would expect bright young college graduates to be making. The result has been a young crop of reporters who work for peanuts but are motivated by idealistic zeal. He called them "politically motivated crusaders". They see this career as a chance to do great things for society. Unfortunately, since most of the new bunch seem wildly lefty (my opinion), doing "great things for society" means a stream of unprofessional and slanted takes on everything.

I don't know. But, after hearing that and lacking a better take, this does seem like a plausible explanation. That still doesn't explain the poor judgement and lack of standards at the upper echelon...the editor seat.

I was never a huge fan of network news many years ago but I miss the standards those folks (Cronkite, et al) brought to the table.
