I think you are right about the next recession NOT looking like 2008. For one thing, banks are very very strong. Their balance sheets are completely recapitalized. The Fed and Treasury did a good job stealing from the American people to recapitalize the TBTF bank balance sheets. So mission accomplished. The next recession won't be a bank financial crisis. However, we could experience a lot of business failures, especially among highly indebted corporation who borrowing money at high yields on dubious projects. Shale oil comes to mind and these Unicorn businesses in tech with high burn rates and no hope for profits for years. So the next recession absolutely could be devastating from a stock market losses perspective, as well as a business failures perspective. But the banks will do just fine.
