For some really fabulous and engaging reading try the REdwall books. Arthurian legend retold in the mouse world. The author is Brian Jaques. Then there is the Dark is Rising series. Also Arthurian in feel, The Grey King in one of the books in that series I think. The Grey King won the Newbery medal. Try also, The Black Pearl, The Borrowers (and they are making a movie of this with John Goodman, which may pique your children's interest), all of the Roald Dahl stories, wonderful for kids, Bridge to Terabitha (very wonderful book dealing with death) Call it Courage, A wrinkle in Time, Rootabaga Stories by Carl Sandburg (one of my children's favoirte collections. All my chidlren love these, and the beauty of the writing is... it is hard to find a superlative for it), all the OZ books are wonderful, especially I think Ozma of OZ, The Patchwork Girl of Oz, Tick Tock of OZ (a clockwork man, and a favorite with boys), Watership Down, Paddle to the Sea, A string in the Harp (wondeful fantasy set in WAles).

I've tried to give you just the books that I think would especially appeal to boys.My daughter has many favorites that I think would not interest a boy in the least. My son is especially fond of the Rootabaga Stories, the Redwall series, and the Oz books. He is only 5 though, so your kids might prefer some of the more mature selections.
