COMMENT: DISH and Ergen need Dr. Karam and Sequans to giterdun for LTE-only. GK can't sell but he's tops at design and certification. DISH is developing a purely IP-only network without any legacy tech. No fall-back to 2/3G.
That's what Reliance JIO of India (RJIO) has done and what Rakuten of Japan is doing now.
Dr. Karam may be the world's best at design and certification of M2M IoT including all the CPE, hotspots, dongles etc he's supplied.. I wonder if Ergen and Masa at Sprint (Softbank) are interested in fool-proofing their launches. Just a thought... Once upon a time GK said: "everything's for sale..."
lightreading.com Dish's Ergen Teases Fixed Wireless, Dynamic Pricing for 5G Network Mike Dano, Editorial Director, 5G & Mobile Strategies 4/10/2019 DENVER -- Dish Network's Charlie Ergen said that his company is eying a wide range of potential services and business models with its planned 5G network, including fixed wireless services in rural areas and dynamic pricing options for network access. However, Ergen acknowledged that the company faces a wide range of steep obstacles as it works to build a nationwide 5G network. "It's harder than I thought it was going to be," Ergen said of Dish's initial work to build a nationwide NB-IoT network... Ergen cautioned that Dish is eying only rural locations with fixed wireless; he said companies like Verizon and Starry are already targeting urban areas with fixed wireless... Ergen also noted Dish won't chase smartphone users with its 5G network but would instead target IoT-style markets like manufacturing, smart cities and robotics. And to offer that kind of service, Ergen said Dish would build its network using the latest software and virtualization technologies. He pointed to Reliance Jio in India and Rakuten in Japan as examples of operators that are building virtualized, cloud-based networks of the kind that Dish aspires to. "We think our capex will be somewhat less than what the incumbent carriers have spent," Ergen said of the approach...

The retailer is not a traditional wireless carrier, but plans to launch 4G services in October 2019, before launching 5G services next year, according to a report from the Japan Times. Rakuten plans to invest some 194 billion yen ($1.7 billion) in its 5G networks. It hopes to have achieved 50% coverage with its 5G network by 2025, and is aiming to acquire 15 million subscribers... |
