Der Trumpenfuhrer NEEDS a coup to survive. He's working to make one.

What do you think of Trump claiming that there was an 'attempted coup'?

Greg Larson

Anybody watching Donald Trump carefully for the last few years should have noticed that he is a master of projection.

The fact is, there is an ongoing attempted coup. It remains to be seen if it will succeed.

There is a law on the books that makes it illegal for the administration to hire or fire anybody in the civil service based on party membership. Since this administration started, Democrats in the civil service have been demonized as the “deep state”, and many have been forced out. For the first time since the Garfield administration, we are starting to have a partisan civil service.

The First Amendment exists (in part) to protect freedom of the press. Since the beginning of his administration, President Trump has been throwing shade on the legitimate free press, calling them fake news, calling them enemies of the people, and threatening to sanction organs of the press that print or air stories unfavorable to him.

The Department of Justice has a tradition going back decades of being non-partisan supporters of the rule of law. Attorney General Richardson and Deputy Attorney General Ruckelshaus both resigned rather than help Nixon interfere with the Watergate investigation. President Trump has repeatedly complained that the he needed an AG who protected his personal interests.

The recent request by the Ways and Means Committee to the IRS should have been a no brainer. The law requires the IRS Commissioner to just do it. But Commissioner Rettig has consulted (illegally) with Secretary Mnuchin, who has consulted (illegally) with the White House about whether or not to do their jobs. Any earlier Attorney General in my lifetime would have enforced the law. The current Attorney General appears to be also willing to consult (illegally) with the White House before doing his job.

The President is trying very hard to subvert the checks and balances in our Constitutional Republic, and convert this nation into an effectively authoritarian one.

That is the real coup.
