I don't care what that article says, any raw data stream can be compresssed equally! If a 28.8 stream can be compressed to 56k then ISDN can be compressed by the same amount ( ISDN is really 128kb/s). The quality of analog lines isn't as good as you might think and not only the A/D and D/As cause trouble but so does bad cables, bridge taps, wet wires, ingress, crosstalk, etc... You just don't even know when your smart modem falls back because of these impairments and all you are getting is 14.4 or 9.6 or worse. This doesn't happen to ISDN.
