I read that cable modem speeds depend on how many users are using the lines at the same time, while this is not the case with DSL. IS this right?

Also, what does it mean that Microsoft-Intel-Compaq are setting "standards" for DSL? -- does it mean that someday soon when you buy a new PC, it will have hardware and software all set for DSL use, but if you want a cable modem, you'll have to go through a difficult customization process? In other words, is ATHM set to become another Netscape or Apple, shut out by the industry titans? Or is there something different about the nature of the cable modem/DSL conflict that will allow both options to compete on equal footing?
