One example; Effect of Treatment Parameters on Structure, Mechanical and Corrosion Properties of Al-Mg-Sc Alloy Forgings with Reduced Concentration of Scandium

5XXX series alloy are used for various applications including automotive, marine and space applications due to their good performance during welding and high corrosion resistance. Commercial Al-Mg-Sc alloys typically contain ~0.2 wt% of Sc and possess improved strength up to 1.5 times. The main limitation for application of these alloys is their high price, so it is necessary to reduce Sc content. Forgings are the popular semi-products for various applications, but depending on scheme of deformation materials can show various structures. This paper deals with the results of investigations of performance of Al-Mg-0.1Sc alloy during hot deformation and further heat treatment. Results of the influence of deformation temperature on mechanical and corrosion properties are introduced. It is shown that even small addition of Sc with proper choice of thermos-mechanical processing can lead to significantly increase of service characteristics with no dramatic reduction of corrosion resistance.

Scandium is a soft, light metal that has applications in the aerospace industry. With a cost of $270 per gram ($122,500 per pound), scandium is too expensive for widespread use.(saw also lower prices of $230/gram)

Titanium’s corrosion rate is so low that after 4000 years in seawater, corrosion would only have penetrated the metal to the thickness of a thin sheet of paper Alloys of titanium are mainly used in aerospace, aircraft and engines where strong, lightweight, temperature-resistant materials are needed. As a result of its resistance to seawater, Titanium is used for hulls of ships, propeller shafts and other structures exposed to the sea.
Cost, pure: $661 per 100g.

Extraction is very energy intensive and complex, therefore the high price but worth the benefits.
An alloy of titanium gold has exceptional properties as implants in human body, as is tantalum.
