Both global warming and global cooling are sell perpetuating trends as per increasing or decreasing ice/snow cover. But interestingly there must be some stronger influence at play because the trends have always managed to reverse eventually. Could it be increasing/decreasing carbon absorption by plants (assuming plant growth flourishes during warming cycles and decline during cooling cycles) or solar activity or ?

As a side note, way before anybody was talking about global warming, I once read a theory that the only thing between us and the next ice age was the northern pine forests and if you cut down enough of them you would trigger the start of a self-enforcing cooling trend due to increased solar reflection...
