And the fact is, he wasn't that great of a general, either. He was ruthless in the execution of Napoleonic tactics that were already falling out of favor before the war, but when faced with a competent General unafraid of his reputation, he lost, repeatedly.

Exactly. Even Meade, no genius on the field, beat him soundly. Lee’s “greatness” relies entirely too much on Maclellan and Burnside’s (and others) MASSIVE incompetence. Imagine Grant or Sherman getting handed Lee’s battle plans at Antietam. War would have been over in ‘62.
