Apple began running ads over the last month promoting iOS "Privacy".

Perhaps this is all part of a review anticipating potential PR disasters they could be open to by letting consumer apps use mobile device management.

This reminds me of the recent smackdown Google, Facebook and others received when they started using certificates in ways that didn't comply in order to collect consumer data.

The tell will be whether Apple also applies the same restrictions or a rethink to corporate users of MDM. Corporate users generally understand that the phone is their company's property, and that the phone and its data will be under scrutiny. Not so sure that users of 3rd party parental control apps understand this relationship in the same way.

Not so sure about the profits thing either. Apple gives Screentime and parental controls away, and are losing their share of the App Store profits - some of these apps are $60/yr (which seems kinda pricey to me). I guess you're correctly pointing out that the policy uniformity is a PR/marketing win. It is.

Also: these articles all seem to focus on the recently introduced Screentime, which adds new insights for users with data about their device and application use and the ability for parents to limit "screen time" to specific hours of the day - while Parental Controls in various forms have been a part of iOS since 2008.
