I have to say I'm finding ads more and more difficult to swallow... the designers are just such #%^&*s
So why do you watch them? I agree you don't have much of a choice on a smartphone, but on a Mac or PC, any good ad blocker will remove them. They take out ads in YouTube videos, including the interstitial ones, unless they're part of the video itself. Some content makers will give their own endorsements right in the video, but they usually at the beginning or end and easy to skip.

Similar for TV. At worst, like when watching live TV or on demand content that can't be skipped, you can mute the TV and do something else until they're over. For everything else already recorded, I can skip them with my TiVo or my cloud DVR on PS Vue.

No reason to put up with most ads these days if you don't want to.
